Polling is to be held today for 11 Rajya Sabha seats in Bihar, Odisha and Haryana. Twenty-six leaders have been elected unopposed. The Election Commission had issued a notification last month for biennial polls for 37 Rajya Sabha seats in 10 states.
Our Patna correspondent reports that in Bihar, voting for the five Rajya Sabha seats will be held. Based on the numerical strength of parties, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is considered certain to win four seats. However, the contest for the fifth seat has become quite interesting.
The election has become more competitive after the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen, led by Asaduddin Owaisi, announced its support for the RJD candidate. While the NDA’s victory on four seats appears assured, it will need cross-voting from three MLAs to secure the fifth seat.
On the other hand, the Rashtriya Janata Dal candidate Amarendra Dhari Singh still needs six more votes to win. After AIMIM’s support, his chances of victory have increased. At present, both alliances are claiming victory.
In Odisha, voting will take place to elect four members to the Rajya Sabha, with five candidates in the fray. Voting will take place in the State Assembly, where 147 MLAs are eligible to cast their votes. Political parties organised training sessions for their members to ensure proper voting and avoid invalid ballots. The polling is being closely watched amid concerns over possible abstentions or defiance of the party whip.
In Haryana, election is being held for two Rajya Sabha seats.
