N Chandrasekaran Steps Down as Tata Sons Chairman, Will Not Seek Reappointment
Mumbai, August 12, 2026: N Chandrasekaran has stepped down as Chairman of Tata Sons and has decided not to seek reappointment after the completion of his current term in February 2027.
Chandrasekaran’s decision comes ahead of the Tata Sons Annual General Meeting scheduled for August 18. In a statement, he said he had completed 40 years of professional life with the Tata Group and described leading Tata Sons for the past decade as a great honour and responsibility.
Current Term to Continue Until February 2027
Although Chandrasekaran has decided against seeking another term, he is expected to continue as chairman until his existing term ends in February 2027. He has also asked the Tata Sons Board to begin the succession process soon to ensure a smooth transition.
Reappointment Decision Had Been Delayed
The development follows months of uncertainty over Chandrasekaran’s reappointment. A proposal to extend his tenure for another five years had been recommended by the Tata Sons Nomination and Remuneration Committee and the Board, but it did not receive unanimous support from the Board. Chandrasekaran subsequently decided to defer the matter.
Reports have also pointed to tensions between Tata Sons and Tata Trusts, which holds a controlling stake in Tata Sons. The disagreement has added to uncertainty over the conglomerate’s future leadership.
Tata Stocks React to the News
The announcement also triggered a negative reaction in the stock market. Shares of major Tata Group companies, including TCS, Tata Power and Tata Steel, declined during trading after the news emerged.
Chandrasekaran has led Tata Sons since 2017 and has been a key figure in the Tata Group’s strategy and expansion across multiple sectors. His decision now sets the stage for one of the group’s most significant leadership transitions in recent years.
