Delhi HC orders to shift activist Sonam Wangchuk to private Hostpital

The Delhi High Court has ordered the immediate shifting of activist Sonam Wangchuk from Safdarjung Hospital  to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. A bench comprising Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia passed the order while hearing a plea filed by Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo. She had challenged a Sunday order by the high court that declined to intervene in his ongoing treatment at the central government hospital.

Appearing for the Centre, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said the government had no objection to Wangchuk being shifted to Medanta Hospital. Meanwhile, the senior law officer asserted that the activist should not seek discharge from Medanta Hospital against medical advice.

The court also interacted with doctors from AIIMS, who are part of the medical team monitoring Wangchuk at Safdarjung Hospital, along with his personal physician. It noted that there was a consensus among the doctors that Wangchuk required continuous medical supervision.

The bench directed the director of Medanta Hospital to constitute a team of specialists to monitor Wangchuk round the clock. It also ordered that Gitanjali Angmo be allowed to visit her husband at the hospital whenever she wishes.
