Bucharest University of Economic Studies confers Honorary Doctorate on President Murmu

President Droupadi Murmu was conferred the honorary title of Doctor Honoris Causa by the Bucharest University of Economic Studies in Romania in recognition of her distinguished public service, commitment to education and social inclusion, and contribution to strengthening India-Romania relations. Accepting the honour, the President dedicated the award to the 1.4 billion people of India and said it reflected the enduring friendship between the people of the two countries.

President Murmu described education as the single most transformative force in her life. Recalling her journey from being the first girl in her village to attend college to becoming the President of India, she said education is the greatest equaliser and the surest foundation of a just and inclusive society. She also stressed that in an era of artificial intelligence and rapid technological change, universities have the responsibility to ensure that knowledge is guided by wisdom, ethics and compassion.

Highlighting the deep cultural and civilisational ties between India and Romania, President Murmu recalled Rabindranath Tagore’s visit to Bucharest a century ago and the influence of Indian philosophy on Romanian poet Mihai Eminescu and scholar Mircea Eliade. She encouraged greater academic collaboration through joint research, faculty and student exchanges and announced that India has doubled the number of ITEC training slots for Romania, including in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence.

Addressing students, the President urged them to use their knowledge and values to build bridges across cultures and contribute to a more peaceful and prosperous world.

President of Senate of Bucharest University of Economic Studies Professor Gheorghe Hurduzeu said, awarding the title of Doctor Honoris Causa to President Droupadi Murmu is both a tribute to an exceptional career and a reaffirmation of the conviction that has defined the university for over a century, education remains the most powerful force for transforming people and societies.

President Murmu also paid a guided tour of the village museum and planted a plant there under the ‘ek ped maa ke naam’ initiative.

NTA has notified four positions for General Manager on contract, each for an initial term of three years. The General Manager, Assessment Research and Development and Psychometrics, will head NTA’s academic and measurement-science function. The General Manager, Test Centre Network and Operations, will lead NTA’s nationwide test-centre footprint, spanning over five hundred cities and select international centres, with responsibility for empanelment standards, capacity planning, and centre quality.

EAM Jaishankar emphasises India’s unwavering commitment to create modern, transparent legal environment

External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar has emphasised India’s unwavering commitment to create a modern, transparent and internationally compatible legal environment. Addressing the inaugural session of international conference of 60th anniversary commemoration of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) in New Delhi, Dr. Jaishankar said that the Commission has consistently demonstrated its ability to adapt to emerging realities while preserving the principles of inclusivity, consensus, and respect for diverse legal traditions.

He added that as one of the eight countries that hold continuous membership of UNCITRAL, India has actively contributed to the evolution of international trade law across several areas. Dr Jaishankar also stressed profound global transformations, driven by technological changes, digital commerce, evolving supply chains and new patterns of investments impacting how goods, services, capital, and data move across borders.

The Minister also highlighted the necessity of predictable and harmonised legal frameworks, efficient dispute-resolution mechanisms, and greater certainty in cross-border transactions. He further underlined the role of the stakes of Global South in ensuring that the evolution of international trade law reflects their developmental priorities and practical realities.

India condemns attack on commercial vessel MV OMORFI in Black Sea

India has strongly condemned the attack on the commercial vessel MV OMORFI in the Black Sea that claimed the life of an Indian national, describing attacks on merchant shipping as unacceptable and calling on all concerned parties to ensure the safety of maritime navigation and international commerce.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the vessel was attacked on July 18 while transiting the Black Sea, reportedly in Russian territorial waters. The ship had 10 crew members on board, including three Indian nationals.

The MEA said one Indian sailor lost his life in the attack, while the other two Indian nationals on board are safe.

In a statement, the Ministry expressed condolences to the bereaved family and said India unequivocally condemns such attacks targeting commercial shipping and placing the lives of innocent civilian crew members at risk.

The ministry said it was a matter of serious concern that the freedom of navigation and international commerce was facing increasing threats.

It urged all concerned parties to uphold their international obligations to ensure the safety and security of maritime navigation and the uninterrupted flow of global trade.

The incident comes days after another attack on the MV Golden Leo, a Guinea-Bissau-flagged cargo vessel, which was reportedly struck on July 19 shortly after departing Ukraine’s Odesa port.

The vessel had 17 crew members, including five Indian nationals. According to the MEA, four Indian crew members were killed in the attack, while one sustained critical injuries.

Following that incident, India had also condemned the targeting of commercial shipping and civilian crew members, while confirming that the Indian Embassy in Ukraine was extending all necessary assistance to those affected.
